August 19 – Tracy Solheim

Researching from the Sidelines: How to Research and Write Great Sports Romance

How do you write a compelling athlete hero your readers will want to root for? Learn how to research athletes and professional sports to write accurate, realistic sports romances that are appealing to both sports fans and readers who aren’t familiar with the sports.

After years of writing reports and testimony for Congress, Tracy Solheim decided to put her fiction writing talents to better use.  In 2013, Berkley Publishing launched her Out of Bounds series, featuring the fictional Baltimore Blaze football team. Since then, she’s published eight books with two different publishers. She also keeps busy putting her sports knowledge to the test in a weekly column for USA Today’s Happy Ever After Blog.  Tracy lives in the heart of SEC country, also known as the suburbs of Atlanta, with her husband and their two works-in-progress.  When she’s not at the barn with her daughter or working out with friends (i.e. lifting heavy bottles of wine), she’s writing.  Except for when she’s reading, but according to her, that’s just necessary research.  See what she’s up to at www.tracysolheim.com.  Or, hangout on her Facebook page for great weekly contests.  She’s also on Twitter, Instagram, Bookbub, and Pinterest.

Program description:

Cranking up the pace of your manuscript could be as simple as gleaning and threshing excess words from your work, rearranging a paragraph here and there, or cutting out entire sections. Watch as international bestselling, RITA award winning author Deeanne Gist edits manuscript pages in real time from attendees’ anonymous submissions, then discuss and compare together to decide if the edits/omissions helped or hurt—and why.

DISCLAIMER: Not for the faint-hearted. Deeanne won’t be mean, but in order for the session to be effective, she will be thorough. Only submit your work if you are willing to have it shown on the screen during the workshop in front of everyone where Deeanne will be respectful, but completely honest, about what needs to be done (in her professional opinion). No names will be used. Release forms will be required for all who submit.
