Make a Way When There’s No Way: Creating your own niche in an ever-changing publishing market

Esteemed historical romance author Beverly Jenkins said in February 2015 in Publisher’s Weekly, “With her self-published [Home] to Milford College series, new author Piper G. Huguley has created her own niche–inspirational historical romances featuring African- Americans.” Self-publishing has opened wonderful opportunities for writers to be heard when traditional publishing didn’t see a way forward for some stories or audiences.  In my presentation, I’ll present examples of how to: write to appeal to a shifting market, engage in market research and build a social media platform. Ultimately, the combination of these factors can define the niche enough that writers can gain the attention of a traditional publisher, if that’s what is desired.
