April 22 – All Day Workshop with Laurie Schnebly

April All-Day Workshop

YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER TO ATTEND

Laurie Schnebly Campbell

Come join GRW for an April All-Day Workshop with speaker Laurie Schnebly Campbell. The morning session will include techniques on making the revision process easier and using your character’s motivation to guide you through plotting a book. The afternoon session will focus on plotting and end with ways to put joy back into your writing. Breakfast, lunch and a great day of programs are included in the cost of the workshop.

Revision Hel–No, Heaven (1-1.5 hours)

Every writer knows about Revision Hell. But the chance to re(en)vision any concept that’s attracted attention can be a wonderful opportunity. This class covers the psychological and practical aspects of revision: when to do it, why (and why not) to do it, how to make the process easier, and — most important of all — how to know when you’re finished.

Plotting Via Motivation (1 hour)

Any of us could write a book in which the characters set out for a three-hour tour and get shipwrecked on an uncharted desert isle. But if you nail down a character’s motivation, it doesn’t matter whether the ship capsizes or lands safely three hours later. Your characters will create a plot from WHATEVER happens, because you’ve got their motivation built in from the very beginning…and here’s how to do it.

From Plot To Finish (2 hours)

Once a writer knows the elements that belong in her characters and her plot, she’s all set…right? Well, actually not always. Making the move from a few basic answers to a manuscript which is actually ready to type involves a series of steps that people have called “incredible…a plotting system which truly RESPECTS that I’m a pantser” and “the easiest way I’ve ever seen of getting from Basic Idea to Finished Book.”

Block-Busting: Putting the Joy Back in Writing (1-1.5 hours)

At some point, almost all writers suffer from the inability to tell the story they want. Part of writer’s block is a lack of joy in the process. Counselor Laurie Schnebly Campbell looks at the causes — including exhaustion, boredom and fear of success — and the benefits of this block. Writers take home new awareness of what works for them, and renewed inspiration for returning to the craft they love.

About the Speaker: Laurie Schnebly Campbell loves speaking to writers about issues that draw on her background as an advertising copywriter, a counseling therapist and a romance novelist who beat out Nora Roberts for Best Special Edition of the Year. By day Laurie writes for McDonald’s, Massage Envy and other clients at a Phoenix ad agency. She also enjoys recording for the blind, playing with her husband and son, vacationing in Sedona (the red-rock town named for her great-grandmother), and running WriterUniv.com.

“People ask how I find time to do all that,” Laurie says, “and I tell them it’s easy.  I never clean my house!”

March 18 – Susan Carlisle & Carol Burnside

Writing An Emotional Synopsis
Synopsis writing is dreaded by many from novice to seasoned writer. Are you one of those who feel like your synopsis is a play-by-play of events, or worse, sounds like a dry book report? This method of constructing a synopsis will free you from the humdrum details, the long descriptions of who did what and why. Two published authors will show you how to take the emotional beats of a romance manuscript and construct a synopsis in six easy steps which will result in favorable comments from agents and editors.

Susan Carlisle’s love affair with books began when she made a bad grade in math in the sixth grade. Not allowed to watch TV until she brought the grade up, Susan filled her time with books. She turned her love of reading into a love of writing romance. If the hero is a smart, sexy alpha male, he can be found in her books along with a strong heroine that captures his heart.

She leads workshops on many writing subjects. In her past life, she has been a full time mother to four children, a high school substitute teacher and now when Susan isn’t writing she is busy being a fun grandmother. She lives near Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband of over thirty years. Susan loves castles, traveling, cross-stitching and reads voraciously. Visit her at www.SusanCarlisle.com

dsc_0039a_med_szCarol Burnside is an award-winning author of “sizzling romance with heart and humor.” Her second-chance-at-love story with her high school sweetheart cemented her belief in a deep and lasting love, and serves as inspiration for every romance she writes while the ever-present glass of sweet tea keeps her energized through long hours at the computer. Although she’s a native Texan, her Sweetwater Springs series of contemporary, small town romances with serious sizzle and a generous dose of southern charm is based in her current home state of Arkansas.

Also published in short stories, Carol’s novel length manuscripts have placed in numerous contests and won several, including the prestigious Maggie Award for Excellence. Writing as Annie Rayburn, she produces genre-blended erotic romances.

You can find her on the web at CarolBurnside.com.
